G20 Summit 15-16 November 2022 in Bali

G20 Heads of State and Government Summit will take place on 15-16 November 2022 in Bali, Indonesia

The 17th G20 Leaders’ Summit will take place in Bali in November 2022. The summit will be the culmination of the G20 process and the intensive work done throughout the year in ministerial meetings, working groups, and engagement groups.

The G20 (abbreviation for Group of Twenty) is an informal association of 19 countries and the European Union that was first held in 1999. It represents the most important industrialized and emerging countries. The G20 serves primarily as a forum for exchanging views on problems of the international economic and financial system, but also for coordination on other global issues such as climate policy, women’s rights, educational opportunities, migration, and terrorism.

The G20 is chaired by the member countries in rotation for one year at a time. The presiding country sets the agenda and hosts the culminating summit of heads of state and government, at which a final declaration is adopted, which was previously negotiated over several months in numerous preliminary events and working groups by the so-called sherpas (the chief negotiators of the member states), and now also increasingly with the participation of civil society. However, the measures adopted therein are not binding under international law, but rather represent a voluntary commitment. The objectives and effectiveness of their resolutions are therefore disputed.

Among the 19 member states are the industrialized countries of the G7 and the emerging countries of the O5. Three members belong to the European Union: Germany, France, and Italy. Until Brexit on January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom was also an EU member. In addition, the EU itself is a member, representing the other EU countries. The countries directly or indirectly represented in the G20 are home to just under two-thirds of the world’s population. They account for over 85 percent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) and account for about three-quarters of global trade (as of the end of 2016). Furthermore, they are responsible for about 80 percent of global CO2 emissions.

The current members of the G20 are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States.

The 17th G20 meeting will be held Nov. 15-16, 2022, on the Indonesian island of Bali because Indonesia holds the G20 presidency by rotation. Indonesian President Joko Widodo is to chair the meeting. This year’s slogan is “recover together – recover stronger”.
